Hungary's PM Orban Will Meet With Trump, Not Biden, On U.S. Trip

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban plans to meet a top U.S. leader during an upcoming visit but his name is not Joe Biden.

It’s Donald Trump, according to The New York Times, which first reported the visit last week.

Orbán’s visit to the U.S. is occurring without an invitation from the White House, as reported by The Guardian. The Hungarian prime minister is anticipated to participate in a panel discussion with the leader of the conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, on Thursday before proceeding to Trump’s West Palm Beach estate, Fox News reported.

According to The Associated Press, Orbán, who has held office since 2010, has advocated for what he terms “illiberal democracy.” However, he has faced criticism from international observers, including the U.S. State Department, for presiding over a progressively autocratic regime in Hungary. Allegations against him include rolling back minority rights, exerting control over the judiciary and media, and manipulating the country’s electoral system to prolong his tenure, the network continued.

But, as Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez wrote in a 2023 op-ed, “Why is the Biden administration funding agitation against Hungary, a NATO ally with a pro-American population?” As he put it, “Hungary may sit strategically at the crossroads of Europe, but what irritates the liberals in the White House is that its government stands up for Western values.”

American conservative commentators have praised Orbán for his stance against the European Union regarding mass migration and his commitment to border security. Some on the right applaud him for what they perceive as safeguarding family values.

In 2019, Orbán implemented a policy that exempts women with four children from paying income tax for life, a move that has been celebrated by some on the right as supportive of family values, as reported by the BBC.

Orbán and Trump have maintained a longstanding alliance, with Trump frequently lauding the populist leader in his campaign addresses. The two met in August 2022 at Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club during Orbán’s visit to the U.S. to address the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas.
