Here We Go Again: Trump Says He Expected to Be Indicted Over Jan. 6

Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he has received notification from special counsel Jack Smith indicating that he is now considered a criminal target of a Washington, D.C. grand jury investigation over alleged actions to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

In an announcement on Truth Social, former Trump revealed that he received a “target letter” on Sunday evening in which Jack Smith’s office extended an invitation for him to appear before the grand jury within a few days.

The significant development suggests the possibility of another indictment, although the specific charges Trump may face have not been disclosed.

Presently, he is already facing indictment in Manhattan for his alleged involvement in “hush money” payments to Stormy Daniels, as well as in Florida, where Smith’s office accused him of mishandling classified documents.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on his platform.

In November, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to conduct an investigation into two aspects concerning fTrump: his handling of sensitive documents and his alleged attempts to overturn the election. The Washington grand jury is currently believed to be examining Trump’s actions during the period spanning from the 2020 election to January 6, 2021.

The grand jury convened at Washington’s E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse is understood to have received testimony from various individuals, including former Vice President Mike Pence, his former chief of staff Marc Short, former Director of the Office of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, White House lawyers Patrick Philbin and Pat Cipollone, and several other witnesses, the Daily Wire reported.

Several conservatives and legal experts responded with outrage to the news.

“Jack Smith sending President Trump a target letter and then indicating he has to appear in front of the Grand Jury makes no sense,” Brett Tolman, former U.S. attorney and the executive director of Right on Crime, noted on Twitter.

“Rarely do you put a target in front of the GJ. They will plead the 5th and you run the risk of compromising your case given Due Process rights,” he added.

“I was harassed for hours by the Jack Smith grand jury as his anti-Trump prosecutors argued with me about challenges to the 2020 election, including whether or not I watched Trump’s election night speech,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton added.

“Having witnessed firsthand their abuse of power, no surprise these partisans now want to arrest Trump on political charges. This is a dire threat to the rule of law,” he continued.

Radio host and author Mark Levin added on the platform: “Conservatives and Republicans everywhere should be furious with the SOB rogue Biden prosecutor, the AG who’s approving this farce, and the undeniable DOJ/FBI campaign to destroy Trump and re-elect Biden.”

Julie Kelly, author and senior contributor to news site American Greatness, responded that it is possible Trump will be charged with seditious conspiracy. If he is and he’s convicted of that crime, then he becomes ineligible to run for any federal office, including the presidency, per the Constitution.
