Election 2024: Most Independents Moving to Trump Over Biden, Survey Finds

Former President Donald Trump continues to gain ground on, and in some cases surpass, President Joe Biden in polling popularity among various voting blocs and demographics, including self-identified independents.

According to a new survey from The Economist/YouGov, more independents prefer Trump over the aging Biden.

Both potential challengers are currently tied in terms of support, with both receiving 39 percent. The remaining respondents consist of nine percent who expressed that they would not vote, seven percent who selected “other,” and five percent who remain undecided. However, it is worth noting that Biden holds a three-point lead among registered voters specifically.

As expected, the majority of Republicans, 83 percent, indicated their support for Trump, while a similar majority of Democrats, 86 percent, expressed their support for Biden. Interestingly, among independents, Trump holds an advantage, with 36 percent stating they would support him in the general election. In comparison, Biden trails by ten points, with 26 percent of independents indicating their support for him, Breitbart News reported, citing the results.

Seventeen percent of independents said they would not vote, 11 percent said “other,” and nine percent indicated they are not sure.

But if Trump and Biden were to meet in a rematch of the 2020 election, it seems clear that a majority of voters are not necessarily enthused by that possibility, per Breitbart:

When asked who they believe will win the presidential election — Biden or Trump — regardless of personal preference, 39 percent said Trump would win the presidential election, compared to 36 percent who believe Biden would emerge victorious. Over a quarter remain unsure. Biden has a two-point advantage among registered voters.

Republicans and Democrats are nearly equally confident that their party’s candidate would win, as 72 percent of Democrats said Biden would win and 73 percent of Republicans said Trump would win.

Once again, independents favor Trump, as 40 percent said the former president would win, compared to 26 percent who believe Biden would. Thirty-five percent remain unsure.

A previous survey conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post actually found Trump with a seven-point lead over Biden, 49 percent to 42 percent.

Breitbart noted regarding the poll: “In total, if Trump is the GOP nominee in 2024, the cross tabs for the poll show 36 percent say they would definitely vote for him against Biden, another nine percent say they would probably vote for Trump in that scenario, and another five percent are leaning toward voting for Trump.”
