Elderly Jewish LA Couple Assaulted in Antisemitic Incident

A Jewish couple in Los Angeles was reportedly attacked on their way to the synagogue on Saturday, with the assailant allegedly shouting, “Give me your earrings, Jew,” before assaulting the husband with a belt.

The victims, identified as Raphy, 75, and Rebecca, 70, expressed determination to continue wearing their faith proudly despite the traumatic incident, the New York Post reports.

The assault occurred in Beverly Hills, and the alleged attacker, Jarris Jay Silagi, 44, was arrested shortly after the incident.

Silagi, who had a previous conviction for second-degree robbery in 2012, is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, and elder abuse, with a hate crime enhancement that could result in a lengthier prison sentence if convicted.

The victims, particularly Raphy, sustained injuries during the attack. Raphy, despite his injuries, returned to the synagogue for a planned Torah reading, emphasizing resilience in the face of adversity.

Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook condemned the attack, stating that such acts of hate against the community would not be tolerated.

Silagi is currently held at the Los Angeles County Jail with a bail set at $100,000, and his court appearance is scheduled for December 12.

The incident highlights the rising concern of antisemitic incidents in the United States, with this attack occurring amid Israel’s conflict with Hamas, leading to increased tensions and incidents targeting Jewish individuals.
