CNN Poll: Most Republican Voters Say Country's Best Days Are Behind Us

The vast majority of self-described Republicans are pessimistic about America’s future.

A new CNN poll found that only 30% of Republican voters believe that America’s best days are yet to come, with 70% believing that they are in the past. The survey was conducted by the SSRS Opinion Panel between March 8-12 and included 1,045 U.S. adults who identify as Republicans or lean towards the Republican party, Newsmax reported.

In a similar poll conducted between September 5-9, 2019, the same group expressed the opposite sentiment, with 77% agreeing that America’s best days were yet to come, while only 18% believed that the country’s best days were in the past, the outlet said.

The poll also revealed that only 9% of those surveyed believe that America’s shifting values regarding gender identity and sexual orientation are having a positive impact on the country, while 78% believe that they are having a negative impact, and 13% hold a neutral stance.

Regarding the role of the federal government, 79% of respondents felt that it is attempting to do too much, which should be left to individuals and businesses, whereas 21% believed that the government should be more involved in resolving the nation’s issues.

The poll also revealed that former President Donald Trump is the preferred choice among potential Republican presidential nominees for 2024, with 40% of respondents selecting him. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the second most popular choice with 36%, while the remaining seven potential candidates each garnered single-digit support.

Furthermore, the poll indicated that 58% of those surveyed believe that Trump has positively impacted the Republican Party, while 28% believe that his influence has been detrimental. The remaining 14% indicated that there has been no significant impact.

Although Trump remains the frontrunner, DeSantis is the top second-choice candidate for GOP voters, leading Trump by 11% with 31% of respondents selecting him as their backup choice, compared to Trump’s 20%. Former Vice President Mike Pence comes in a close third with 17% support as a secondary candidate.

Regarding Trump’s first-choice support, 60% of respondents said they would definitely vote for him in the presidential race, while 40% said they were open to changing their minds.

According to the survey, the majority of Republican voters prioritize having a presidential nominee who shares their stances on major issues (59%) over a candidate who would have a good chance of defeating Democratic President Joe Biden in the general election.

The economy emerged as the top issue for Republican voters in 2024, with 32% of respondents prioritizing it. Immigration came in second place with 16%, followed by candidate qualities at 13%, foreign policy at 9%, and government spending and size tied with values, morals, and rights at 7% each, Newsmax noted.
