Climate Czar John Kerry will Step Down to Focus on Biden Campaign: Report

U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, is reportedly planning to leave his position at the White House in the coming months to join President Biden’s presidential campaign, as per Axios.

Kerry, who previously ran for president in 2004, was the first to hold the role of U.S. special presidential envoy for climate, a position created by Biden in January 2021. Kerry had endorsed Biden for president in 2019.

The position of Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, established without Senate approval, has faced criticism from Republicans. In July, over two dozen Republicans introduced the “No Taxpayer Funding for Climate Zealots Advancing Radical Schemes Act” with the intention of defunding Kerry’s role. Critics, like Rep. Chip Roy from Texas, accused Kerry of being the symbol of the Biden administration’s anti-energy policies, claiming they adversely impact the economy and national security.

Earlier in July, Rep. Brian Mast from Florida accused Kerry of lacking transparency about his office during a hearing, prompting Kerry to refrain from disclosing specific names, citing the State Department’s process.

The departure of Kerry from his climate envoy role to join Biden’s campaign underscores the political sensitivity of climate policies and the scrutiny faced by officials in such positions. As a key figure in environmental initiatives, Kerry’s transition could have implications for the Biden administration’s approach to climate issues and its political strategy leading up to the next presidential election.
