AOC Says Scotus Should Have Its Power Limited After Landmark Decisions

Leftist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York became the latest Democrat to bash the Supreme Court for what she deemed an “abuse of power” following its recent landmark decisions.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” she proposed impeachment and subpoenas as measures to rein in the justices’ authority.

Ocasio-Cortez voiced her concerns over the Court’s overreach, stating, “The Supreme Court is far overreaching their authority. And I believe, frankly, that we really need to be having conversations about judicial review as a check on the courts as well.”

Last week, the Supreme Court issued several significant rulings, including rejecting affirmative action, ruling in favor of a Christian web designer’s right to refuse creating same-sex wedding websites, and striking down President Biden’s student loan debt cancellation plan.

Democrats have swiftly denounced these decisions, claiming the Court is “illegitimate.”

“These are the types of rulings that signal a dangerous creep toward authoritarianism and centralization of power in the courts,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed. “In fact, we have members of the court themselves with Justice Elena Kagan saying that the court is beginning to assume the power of a legislature.”

Ocasio-Cortez has been an outspoken advocate for court-packing and curtailing the Court’s influence.

She even suggested the possibility of subpoenas and impeachment, stating, “And so I believe that if Chief Justice Roberts will not come before Congress for an investigation voluntarily, I believe that we should be considering subpoenas. We should be considering investigations.”

The congresswoman emphasized her belief that there should be stricter ethics guidelines and oversight, claiming that members of the Supreme Court could be engaging in misconduct.

She argued that the Court’s actions have eroded its own legitimacy and posed a threat to the democracy of the nation.

In contrast, President Biden recently clarified his opposition to expanding the Supreme Court during an interview on MSNBC. He expressed concerns that such efforts would politicize the Court in a detrimental manner.
