AOC: Capitalism Is Lowering US Birth Rates, More Immigration Needed

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that more immigration is the solution to the US’s declining birth rates, because people are suffering “under the burdens of capitalism.”

The New York congresswoman said on Instagram that young people weren’t having children due to the economic system and offered a solution.

“There are quite a few countries that are really struggling because young people, under the burdens of capitalism and living in a society that is increasingly concentrating wealth among the rich, we’re not having kids. Or we’re not having kids at the same rate,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And we actually need immigrant populations to help balance things out. We can’t continue to fund social security, Medicare, all of this stuff without immigrants. And it’s always been that way. Don’t act like this is some new trend or anything like that.”

The Census Bureau states that births in the United States have remained “broadly stable” though annual births have fallen from 4.1 million births in 1990 to 3.7 million in 2019.

The US’s immigrant population has been rising since 1970, US Census Bureau data shows.

According to BNN Bloomberg, AOC has called capitalism “irredeemable” in the past, saying “Capitalism is an ideology of capital –- the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit… so to me, capitalism is irredeemable.”

She said that “we should be scared right now because corporations have taken over our government.” She also said that a “Very small group of actual capitalists” control labor markets at that the system is “not a redeemable system for us to be able to participate in for the prosperity and peace for the vast majority of people.”
