Man Charged with Attempted Murder In Philadelphia Shooting That Left Officer Critically Injured

A 36-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a traffic stop shooting that left a Philadelphia police officer in critical condition, authorities announced.

Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez faces two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault, evading arrest, home invasion, kidnapping, and numerous other related charges. He is currently held on a $12.5 million bond.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel initially reported that the 31-year-old officer and his partner conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with four individuals inside. However, during a Monday press conference, police clarified that Vazquez was alone in the car when the stop began, and a 37-year-old male and two 33-year-old females arrived later, speaking Spanish to the officers without indicating any immediate threat.

Officers found that Vazquez did not have a driver’s license and the vehicle was unregistered. Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore explained that the car would be towed and confiscated.

Following the traffic stop, the wounded officer’s partner drove him to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Mayor Cherelle Parker commented on the officer’s condition, saying he is “on life support. On a breathing machine. Fighting for his life.”

“As your mayor, it is not lost on me that today a husband, a father, and a son met his partner and went to work to do a job that he’s been doing for about six and a half years,” Parker said. “He didn’t expect that he would be in a fight for his life right now.”

Vazquez was apprehended after two barricade situations, including taking a resident hostage in his home. He eventually released the hostage and surrendered to authorities without further incident.

The three other individuals who arrived at the scene remain part of the ongoing investigation, although they are not currently facing charges.

Officials have not yet publicly named the wounded officer.
