Leftist 'Squad' Member Calls for 16-Year-Olds and Felons to Be Able to Vote

Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley, part of the progressive ‘Squad,’ has introduced the Inclusive Democracy Act, a bill aiming to end so-called “felony disenfranchisement” and give the ability to vote for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated citizens.

During a press conference, Pressley argued that nearly 4.6 million people were unable to vote due to felony convictions, disproportionately affecting black and Hispanic citizens, AP reports.

The proposed legislation would require educating incarcerated individuals on their voting rights and providing resources for voter registration.

Pressley also expressed support for allowing individuals as young as 16 to vote, citing the need to protect and expand access to the ballot box.

The Inclusive Democracy Act faces challenges, particularly in the Republican-controlled House.

Pressley framed the bill as a response to efforts undermining voting rights and excluding minority communities from the democratic process, stating that “Jim Crow is not behind us.” The legislation doesn’t alter states’ authority over voting eligibility for local elections but focuses on federal elections.

Pressley’s call for voting rights restoration aligns with her broader advocacy for progressive democratic values. The bill aims to address disparities in felony disenfranchisement, echoing concerns about racial inequality. However, its chances of success in a politically divided environment remain uncertain. The legislation also includes provisions for voting by mail in prisons.

The press conference marked a bold move by Pressley and comes at a time when voting rights have become a central and contentious issue in U.S. politics. With the backdrop of discussions on felon voting rights, Pressley emphasized the urgency of protecting democracy and expanding access to the ballot box.
