Former Detroit Officer Faces Manslaughter Charges in Death of 71-Year-Old He Allegedly Punched

Former Detroit police officer Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, faces manslaughter charges after a September altercation led to the death of 71-year-old Daryl Vance.

Brown, responding to a disorderly conduct call, engaged in a “verbal confrontation” with Vance outside a bowling alley, ultimately punching him, Fox News Digital reports.

Vance fell, struck his head, and died three weeks later in the hospital. Prosecutors assert that Brown, rather than deescalating the situation, became the aggressor, leading to criminal actions. Brown pleaded not guilty during his arraignment, receiving a $100,000 bond, Daily Mail reports.

“Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant. But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said.

Detroit Police Chief James White said Brown was suspended due to “influenced by concerns that, at the very least, the officer did not adequately de-escalate or disengage from the situation.”

“In the course of his response, the officer encountered an individual in his 70s, who appeared to be in an intoxicated state,’ he told the The Detroit News.

“Video downloaded from the officer’s body-worn camera shows that the officer attempted on several occasions to ask and then direct the individual causing the disturbance to leave the area and he refused to comply.

“In the video, it appears to show the individual strike the officer on the head and the officer responds by striking the individual in the area of the jaw.”

“This resulted in the individual falling and likely striking his head on the ground,” White said.
