Florida House Dem Hit With Ethics Probe After Alleged Campaign Finance Violations

The House Ethics Committee is currently investigating Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat from Florida, for alleged campaign finance violations related to her 2022 elections.

Cherfilus-McCormick, a former health care CEO, won a special election in January 2022 to fill the seat left vacant by the late Representative Alcee Hastings in Florida’s heavily Democratic 20th Congressional District. Subsequently, she won the regular election in November 2022, Fox News Digital reports.

The committee unanimously voted to establish an investigative subcommittee to determine if Cherfilus-McCormick violated campaign finance laws during either of her 2022 elections. The subcommittee will also investigate allegations that she failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House and may have accepted voluntary services for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office.

The subcommittee will be chaired by Representative Andrew Garbarino, a Republican from New York, with Representative Chrissy Houlahan, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, serving as the ranking member. Representatives Cliff Bentz of Oregon and Troy Carter of Louisiana will also be part of the subcommittee.

The House Ethics Committee clarified that the establishment of an investigative subcommittee does not automatically indicate that a violation has occurred. The decision to take action follows a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics regarding the matter.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s office responded to the investigation, emphasizing that the mere establishment of an investigative subcommittee does not imply any wrongdoing. The congresswoman is said to be taking the matter seriously and working to resolve it. The committee’s statement underscores the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need for further inquiry to determine if any violations have indeed taken place.
