Charlotte Shootout Claims Lives of Four Law Enforcement—Fallen Heroes Identified

The identities of the law enforcement officers tragically killed in a shootout in Charlotte, North Carolina, have been disclosed.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks Jr., a 13-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), was among those killed. Weeks, aged 48, is survived by a wife and four children.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) identified their fallen officer as Joshua Eyer, who served the department’s North Tryon Division for six years. Officer Eyer was described as brave, with a procession honoring his sacrifice.

Sam Poloche and William “Alden” Elliott, both officers with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC), were also tragically killed. Poloche joined NCDAC in 2013, while Elliott joined in 2016. They both served several years as probation/parole officers and are remembered for their dedication to protecting communities.

The shooting occurred during a U.S. Marshals Task Force operation, resulting in a violent confrontation initiated by the suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., who was killed in the exchange of gunfire. Eight law enforcement officers were shot, with three CMPD officers and a U.S. Marshals Task Force officer injured and recovering.

Authorities believe two shooters may have been involved and have taken two persons of interest into custody for further investigation.

“These officers died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state,” NCDAC’s press release said. “We remember them, we honor their service, we send our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and we pray for healing for all affected by this tragic incident.”

“They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us,” the president said in a statement. “We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded.”
