VP Harris Wants Ban on Guns 'Intentionally Designed to Kill People'

Vice President Kamala Harris has once again made a head-scratching statement, this time about guns she wants to see banned.

In particular, those that are “intentionally designed to kill people” — which is pretty much all firearms.

That said, Harris on Sunday renewed a familiar Democratic call for reinstating a Federal Assault Weapons Ban, the Bill Clinton-era law that Republicans allowed to expire 10 years later because studies found it had no appreciable effect on lowing homicide rates.

The vice president argued that certain semi-automatic firearms are “intentionally designed” to kill people and should only be on a battlefield.

During an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Harris discussed her visit last week to Highland Park, Ill., where a man armed with a semi-automatic rifle fired on a Fourth of July parade, killing 7 and injuring 46.

“When you meet with first responders, when you meet with families of these victims, you cannot avoid the reality of what the impact of this gun violence is on a community,” the vice president said.

Harris went on to claim that mass shootings keep happening across the country “because those weapons are available, and we have to stop allowing those weapons to be available to civilians living in communities of people who have a right to believe that they are not in a war zone.”

“Assault weapons were specifically and intentionally designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly,” she noted, going on to repeat more Democratic talking points.

“It is a weapon of war. If you’ve ever looked at, if I may be so blunt, an autopsy photograph to see what it does to the human body. And the fact that we can’t get Congress to renew –  it’s not like we’re pulling something out of our hat. We’ve done it before as a nation – to renew the assault weapons ban, is outrageous,” she said.

“You can support the Second Amendment,” she added. “I support the Second Amendment, but we should agree we should not have weapons of war on the streets of America.”

Fox News reported:

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which expired in 2004, specifically outlawed 19 types of semi-automatic firearms, as well as other rifles, shotguns and handguns that possess two or more of a certain set of features, including pistol grips, detachable magazines, and sound suppressors. The maximum capacity of a magazine was also set at 10 rounds.

study released for the Department of Justice in 2004 found that its “impact on gun violence is likely to be small at best, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.”

By the FBI’s own definition, there are “mass shootings” nearly every day in many of America’s biggest cities, all of which are run by Democrats: Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, D.C.

But those attacks are not carried out with semi-automatic, military-style rifles; the vast majority of murders committed in the country are committed with handguns, which has to make you wonder why Democrats continue to focus only on rifles.

Recent polling has shown that roughly half of Americans support a nationwide ban on so-called ‘assault weapons,’ but those surveys never inform respondents that homicides using such weapons are so statistically small as to nearly be insignificant. If they were informed — and shame on our ‘mainstream media’ for refusing to do so — their opinions would likely change.
