McCarthy Says He's Open to Expunging Both of Trump's Impeachments

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Thursday he is open to the idea of expunging both of former President Donald Trump’s impeachments, claiming — truthfully — they were not related to legitimate wrongdoing but rather were entirely motivated by politics.

“I would understand why members would want to bring that forward,” McCarthy told a press conference in response to a question about it on Thursday, according to The Hill. “But I understand why individuals want to do it, and we’d look at it.”

The outlet added:

In the last Congress, a group of more than 30 House Republicans led by Rep. Markwayne Mullin (Okla.) put forward a resolution to expunge Trump’s impeachment in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The resolution was supported by the fourth-ranking Republican in the House, Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (N.Y.).

“I would certainly be interested in it,” Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) said. And Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) added that he’s “definitely interested” in expunging Trump’s impeachments.

The Senate ultimately acquitted Trump following both impeachments, failing to reach the two-thirds majority needed for conviction.

Now, President Joe Biden is facing a similar threat. Momentum is building among a growing number of House Republicans to begin impeachment proceedings against Biden after classified documents were discovered in his possession at two locations, including a garage in one of his Delaware homes.

Several experts have noted that, as a vice president, Biden would not have had the authority to declassify anything, and it’s not clear if then-President Barack Obama did so before Biden allegedly removed those documents.

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said on national television this week a Biden impeachment “will happen.”

Maria Bartiromo of Fox News asked the congressman directly: “If you find that there was actual evidence of wrongdoing, will you support impeaching Joe Biden?”

“Oh, that’s something that will happen,” Donalds responded. “But what we want to do right now is go through the process of investigation.”

WATCH at about the 8:30 mark:

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also stressed the i-word in all capital letters for the president, tweeting: “Republicans will bring accountability back to Washington. We will investigate Dr. Fauci. We will repeal the 87,000 IRS army. And we will IMPEACH JOE BIDEN.”

Other top Republicans in Congress are voicing their support for impeaching Biden, among them is U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenny, R-N.Y.

“Whether it is Joe Biden’s dereliction of duty at the Southern Border or his disastrous retreat in Afghanistan, I have called for Joe Biden to answer to the American people in Impeachment hearings. I will not stand by while Biden and Pelosi trample on our constitution to push their far-left agenda. I look forward to working with a Republican House Majority … to impeach Biden and hold his administration accountable for their numerous failures.”

Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas stated: “I really believe that impeachment could be on the table. And I would support that, certainly. The bar was so low to impeach President Trump. And even if the bar were raised exponentially, I believe that President Biden has met that requirement. What we’re seeing at the border is not just criminal, but it is immoral.”
