Nothing screams 2021 like a London library apologizing for bringing a “Rainbow Dildo Butt Monkey” to entertain children. The Redbridge Libraries hosted a Summer Reading Challenge event Saturday in east London, and invited the Mandiga Arts Group to entertain.

Video footage of the event might make one think they were slipped a hallucinogen. The performers in bizarre costumes and makeup dance around. One particularly offensive “performer” was dressed “in a rainbow monkey costume exposing a fake buttocks and a fake penis” reported the Evening Standard.

Writer Janice Turner wrote: “I would really love a detailed breakdown of the commissioning process whereby Redbridge council commissioned the Rainbow Dildo Butt Monkey as a means to teach children to read.” Tim Pool, known for @Timcast tweeted, “let the rainbow dildo but money teach your kids, bigot.”

Both the library and Mandiga Arts apologized for the event in tweets over the weekend. Redbridge Libraries tweeted, “During an event put on at the library today there was a performance by a Carnival Arts Company. Unfortunately one of the animal costumes was inappropriate which we were not aware of at the time of booking.”

They then distanced themselves from the event, adding, “We deeply apologise for the offence caused. This is being looked into and a further statement will be made. This event was arranged by Vision and not Redbridge Council. Upon receiving complaints passed on by the Leader and Deputy Leader, we ceased the performance and are truly apologetic for the distress caused to residents.”

Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure (RCL) told the Evening Standard that it was “utterly appalled by the unacceptable event at Redbridge Libraries on Saturday.” They too distanced themselves, saying the event was organized by their “independent leisure contractor, Vision.”

Mandiga Arts apologized for any “offence caused” and said the group “never intended to offend residents.” They tweeted, “we respect everyone’s individual opinion with no offence to any part. Actions are being taken, more information to follow.” Sounds like they were well aware of “Rainbow Dildo Butt Monkey” in attendance; they like it, but “respect everyone’s individual opinion.” How kind.
