Kyrsten Sinema Explains Why She No Longer Attends ‘Dumb’ Democrat Luncheons

Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who has yet to declare she will run for reelection next year in Arizona, continues to play the ‘maverick’ role in the vein of the late Sen. John McCain.

Sinema disclosed her reasons this week for no longer attending what she referred to as “dumb” Democratic luncheons where “old dudes” would sit around “eating Jell-O” and boasting about themselves.

According to POLITICO, the 46-year-old former Democrat-turned-independent informed GOP lobbyists that she considered “caucus lunches” to be a complete waste of time and had no desire to attend them again.

“Lunches were ridiculous. … Old dudes are eating Jell-O, everyone is talking about how great they are,” Sinema said. “I don’t really need to be there for that. That’s an hour and a half twice a week that I can’t get back.”

“The Northerners and the Westerners put cool whip on their Jell-O, and the Southerners put cottage cheese,” she added as she continued to mock members of her former party.

Sinema further clarified that she was not caucusing with the Democrats and emphasized that she spends her time engaging in more “productive” activities that benefit her constituents.

“I’m formally aligned with the Democrats for committee purposes,” Sinema said. “But apart from that, I am not a part of the caucus.”

“I spend my days doing productive work, which is why I’ve been able to lead every bipartisan vote that’s happened the last two years,” she noted further.

In December, Sinema announced her departure from the Democratic Party and her decision to register as an independent.

“Arizonans – including many registered as Democrats or Republicans – are eager for leaders who focus on common-sense solutions rather than party doctrine,” she wrote at the time in an op-ed column published in The Arizona Republic.

“But if the loudest, most extreme voices continue to drive each party toward the fringes – and if party leaders stay more focused on energizing their bases than delivering for all Americans – these kinds of lasting legislative successes will become rarer,” she added.

“It’s no wonder a growing number of Americans are registering as independents. … When politicians are more focused on denying the opposition party a victory than they are on improving Americans’ lives, the people who lose are everyday Americans,” Sinema continued. “I have joined the growing numbers of Arizonans who reject party politics by declaring my independence from the broken partisan system in Washington.”
