The nation of Austria has just imposed what may be the most draconian lockdown measures in the Western world.

Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced on Sunday that his nation is placing millions of its citizens on lockdown if they are unvaccinated, Politico reported.

The lockdown is, essentially, home confinement for those who have not gotten one of the approved vaccines.

Those affected will be told to stay at home except for essential trips like for work or shopping. The decision is expected to impact some 2 million people from the population of 9 million.

The decision comes as the country grapples with its highest rates of infection since the pandemic began. On Saturday, Austria reported over 13,000 new cases. Meanwhile, its vaccination rate at 63 percent is below the EU average and far behind countries such as Portugal, Malta and Spain which are above 80 percent.

“The corona situation in Austria is serious,” the chancellor said. “We have to raise the vaccination quota, it’s shameful. Help us break this fourth wave, the only way is vaccination.”

The chancellor said weeks ago that it was likely that the unvaccinated would face a lockdown.

“The pandemic is not yet in the rearview mirror,” he said in October. “We are about to stumble into a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

“It is happening. Austria has announced they will have a lockdown for the unvaccinated. They will have police out on the streets checking peoples papers to see if their medical status allows them to be outside. Imagine telling someone this 1 year ago,” Swedish Journalist Peter Imanuelsen said.

“I am an #Austrian and from Monday on I will be a second-class citizen. Government said today that the #lockdown for #unvaccinated people won’t just be in Upper Austria and Salzburg but in all of Austria. Dictatorship is here,” a self declared Austrian citizen said.

“Austria wants to lockdown ‘the unvaccinated’ but wait, didn’t Germany try locking down a segment of its population for being different back in the 1940s? How’d that work out?” Republican Lavern Spicer said.

“A divided society (the jabbed Vs the jabbed-nots) in Austria as lockdown imposed on all unvaccinated people. Dark times for freedom and liberty,” UK political commentator and former politician Nigel Farage said.

Protests broke out against the new lockdown measures.

Politico reported that restrictions were placed on the unvaccinated on Friday.

An Austrian region has announced strict measures solely for unvaccinated people, as the country grapples with surging cases of coronavirus.

From Monday, anyone in Upper Austria who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 will only be allowed to leave their homes to work, buy groceries or for emergencies, reports Die Presse.

The region has the among highest levels of vaccine hesitancy in the country, but the move could be a sign of things to come for the rest of Austria. Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg warned on Thursday that similar national restrictions could be days away.

But does anyone believe that Joe Biden and the Democrats would not impose similar measures in the United States if they were not stopped by the courts?

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to “take no steps to implement or enforce the Mandate until further court order,” Fox News reported.

This is the most recent development in what is likely to be a long, legal fight to determine the Constitutionality of the workplace mandate.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, one of the critics of the mandate, celebrated the court victory on Twitter.

“Citing Texas’s “’argument[s],’ the 5th Circuit has stayed OSHA’s unconstitutional and illegal private-business vaccine mandate. WE WON! Litigation will continue, but this is a massive victory for #Texas and for FREEDOM from Biden’s tyranny and lawlessness,” he said.
