AOC Suggests the Parents Bill of Rights Is Fascism

House Democrats have criticized the Parents Bill of Rights, a GOP-sponsored bill that they claim would limit education and lead to book bans.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Julia Letlow, aims to require public schools to disclose their curriculum materials to parents, mandate parental consent for student surveys, and prohibit schools from selling student information for commercial gain.

During a floor debate, House Democrats accused Republicans of wanting to restrict children’s education and limit their freedom. They argued that the bill would prevent students from learning about important issues such as the Holocaust and LGBTQ+ experiences in America.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries claimed that some Republicans had extreme views on education.

“Extreme MAGA Republicans don’t want the children of America to learn about the Holocaust,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said. “They want to ban a book called Melissa, a book describing in very personal terms the experience of a trans girl beginning to understand her identity … What’s so offensive about Melissa?… Extreme MAGA Republicans don’t want your child to learn about the LGBTQ+ experience in America. That’s not a decision that extreme MAGA Republicans here in Congress should make.”

The Parents Bill of Rights is a top priority for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and is expected to be passed on Friday.

The bill aims to commemorate the age of students when they begin kindergarten. However, House Democrats believe that the bill could be used to limit education and infringe on children’s rights.

“Our children need urgent and aggressive educational solutions,” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said. “When we talk about progressive values, I can say what my progressive value is, and that is freedom over fascism.”

The House is currently voting on a number of amendments related to the bill, and it remains to be seen how it will ultimately be implemented.
